The European Data Protection Seal Opens to the World

🎉 𝗚𝗗𝗣𝗥 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀! The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has approved Europrivacy criteria to serve as European Data Protection Seal outside of Europe, including as a mechanism for international data transfer under Art. 46 GDPR.

🌍 𝗚𝗗𝗣𝗥 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹: The first decision authorises the new Europrivacy criteria to be used as European Data Protection Seal under Article 42 GDPR in non-European countries. Enabling non-European companies to demonstrate their compliance and to benefit from the advantages of the GDPR certification.

🔐 𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀: The second decision authorises the use of a specific version of Europrivacy criteria to be used as a mechanism for international data transfer under Article 46 GDPR. This new mechanism provides a more reliable instrument that ensure effective compliance and reduces risks for all parties. It strengthens legal certainty and promotes trust in international data transfers, while enhancing data protection.

🚀 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗗𝗣𝗥 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: The GDPR makes 73 references to certification with legal effects, enabling companies to:
✔ Check and demonstrate compliance;
✔ Reduce risks and enhance trust;
✔ Simplify compliance management and save associated costs;
✔ Turn compliance into a competitive advantage and a source of revenues;
✔ Facilitate data transfers.

Moreover, Europrivacy enables companies to:
✔ Extend compliance assessment to non-EU jurisdictions;
✔ Access online resources to support compliance and certification;
✔ Benefit from a global ecosystem of service providers.

📈 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱: There is a growing need to demonstrate data protection compliance across borders. Contractual commitments are useful, but they are not sufficient to ensure that compliance is effectively implemented.

🔗 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Europrivacy criteria and methodology are closely aligned with Interprivacy, the international and geographically neutral data protection certification approved by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and its 99 national accreditation authorities. Both certification schemes complement each other to build trust in data transfers and in a digital economy respectful of individual rights and freedoms.
